Therapy For Men: How Does It Work and Why Is It Important?

It goes without saying that men's mental health has been long overlooked. Society's expectations and traditional gender roles play a huge part in why men are often reluctant to discuss or seek help with their struggles. The stereotyping that they're subject to could make men believe that they would be seen as weak, non-resilient and pathetic if they were to reach out for support with their mental health. However, over recent years, we are seeing a slight improvement in the awareness given towards men's mental health, especially with charities such as Movember supporting the cause. With that in mind, I would like to take the opportunity to discuss men's counselling and how it can significantly help a man face his fears and unhappiness. It takes great courage and strength to seek professional advice and help, especially when addressing your own personal challenges. The importance of therapy for men cannot be overstated, especially in today's high-stress society. With therapists for men becoming increasingly sought after, more males are reaping the benefits of what specialist support offers.

Understanding Men's Issues

Men are as in touch with their emotions as women; it's just they tend not to discuss them as openly. Due to the previous generation putting a somewhat shameful connotation around seeking help as a man, men have to face unique challenges and pressures, believing they should handle their issues alone. Vulnerability has always been so foreign to men, but without addressing an issue, this can lead to long-term effects that can take an even greater toll. Most commonly, men face issues such as stress, depression, anxiety, relationship problems, and difficulties with self-esteem and masculinity. By seeking men's therapy, you are given a safe and non-judgmental space to express how you really feel.

The Role of Therapists

As a specialist person-centred therapist, I understand the broad range of challenges that this gender faces. Over the years, I have adapted my skillset to address a man's case differently, ensuring that I support them in a way that benefits their unique mindset. I work with them to develop coping strategies, improve their self-esteem and build stronger communication skills while capitalising on the importance of addressing their problems instead of bottling them up.

Person-Centred Therapy for Men

I have found that person-centred therapy is the most effective therapeutic approach available today. Why? Because although it puts the control in the client's hands, it offers a new level of comfort and security by doing so. This therapy type emphasises the importance of the client-therapist relationship, focusing solely on the client's needs and goals. It was initially developed to capitalise on the belief that every person has the innate capacity for self-awareness and growth. It's a treatment course that is adaptable and versatile to each specific case. Therefore, you can deal with each session at your own pace with a third-party listener (your therapist) offering nurture, empathy, listening and support.

Why is therapy so important?

No matter the therapy type, there are many benefits to seeking this level of professional help. See below for a brief insight.

  1. Mental Health and Well-being

Counselling for men promotes mental health and well-being. By addressing the issues they're facing, men can develop effective coping strategies, improve their self-love and maintain a positive outlook on life. In addition, by being open in a safe space, being vulnerable will no longer be an issue.

2. Relationship Skills

Therapists can encourage positive communication techniques, allowing them to nurture relationships and build new ones. You will soon strengthen connections with those around you, improving your emotional well-being and life satisfaction.

3. Breaks Stigmas

Thirdly, the stigmas surrounding men attending therapy have dramatically reduced over recent years. As more men seek therapy and openly discuss their experiences, it'll encourage others to do the same. Although you may not feel it, there is a much more open and accepting dialogue about men's mental health in society. There has been a big movement towards how opening up and speaking out is important for both genders, and therapy can provide support in a multitude of ways.

4. Preventative Care

By seeking professional help, you will prevent further severity of the issue. Early intervention is crucial in ensuring that you don't experience long-term effects or have feelings that are overwhelming or debilitating. Making your mental health a priority will help safeguard your physical health and ensure you have the support you need for whatever life throws at you.

5. Promoting Resilience

Through therapy, you'll feel a sense of resilience you've never felt before. Facing your troubles and gaining a safe and supportive place to express your inner thoughts and feelings will allow you to better cope with challenges in future and bounce back from adversity.
