Does Therapy Have To Be Weekly?

There are no structured rules to therapy. In fact, therapy is a completely bespoke solution that is different for everyone based on their needs, availability and budget. However, there is an emphasis on the importance of regular sessions and consistency.Weekly sessions are often recommended by therapists and counsellors to start off with, then occasionally followed by fortnightly sessions. Gradually reducing the frequency of sessions until support is no longer needed is always an option, but many people have experienced traumatic or painful endings in their life. In which case it is important to address these events during a structured focus on ending therapy within regular weekly/fortnightly sessions rather than opting for a more flexible approach to their therapy. So, how is therapy designed to work? What are the benefits of weekly therapy sessions? And why is therapy different for everyone? Read on to find this out and more.

How therapy is designed to work.

During our initial consultation together, we will identify the various factors contributing to your current difficulties and devise a plan for an individually tailored therapeutic intervention. Depending on the extent of your difficulties, we can discuss how many sessions a month you need to start seeing changes in your life. Most of my clients see me on a weekly basis, to begin with.Therapy is designed to draw out information, allowing the therapist to identify specific issues that contribute to your difficulties. In order to see progress, you need to have the willingness, motivation, commitment and faith to see it all through. This requires relationship building, problem assessment, goal setting, counselling intervention, evaluation, termination, or referral.Typically, weekly sessions will help you faster as you have more support.

Benefits of weekly therapy sessions.

  • Consistency helps boost effectiveness.

If a client opts for weekly sessions, then they will see more of an improvement in their condition than if they were to have monthly sessions. The contents of each weekly session will be fresh in your memory as a result. For some conditions, the time between each monthly session may slow down improvements in your mental health. Gaining momentum with weekly therapy sessions can help you overcome problems quicker than you may have first thought. Having that regular session in place is helpful as it’s much easier to maintain, proven to be more effective, and is the perfect way to get started with your therapy. Effectiveness has clear links to frequency, so it’s best for you to have weekly sessions due to the results it clearly brings.

  • Regular therapy sessions help build trust.

The relationship with your therapist will only be strengthened through the sessions you have together; that’s why it is key to have more of them on a regular basis. With my therapy in Warrington, for example, my clients are able to build that trust and tell me more about their situation, which is vital to supporting them. Clients that have monthly sessions may take longer to build that connection with their therapist. It’s also more difficult at times for therapists to engage with them as well. Through weekly sessions, you’ll start to feel more comfortable and confident as the weeks go by, allowing you to progress in the right direction. For the best results and quickest recovery, any awkwardness needs to be eliminated completely!

  • From weekly to monthly to termination

Starting off with weekly therapy sessions is the way to go since you can transition into monthly sessions later down the line when your condition has started to improve or you have built a strong professional relationship with your therapist. A therapist may be able to give you an indication of how well you’re doing and offer a reduced course of sessions if possible. Since you have started with weekly therapy sessions, the main crux of the problem may have been sorted, and any other niggling issues can be ironed out. Therapy shouldn’t last forever, so it can sometimes work best to gradually reduce the number of sessions, so it feels like a gradual process rather than an abrupt end. The end goal is termination, after all. So, aim to start with weekly sessions first and foremost, then by all means consider reducing these at a natural and comfortable rate.

Therapy is different for everyone.

Some people may want to start having monthly sessions. Although we don’t usually recommend this as therapists, it is entirely up to you and is still a better option than not having any sessions at all. Perhaps you may only be able to afford monthly sessions, or you don’t feel you need as much support. Whatever the reasoning, this can be factored into your devised plan with me during our consultation session together.Other clients may want to have sessions bi-weekly, which is perfectly acceptable as well; therapists just want to see you overcome your difficulties in the quickest possible time it may take.
